Some Important Tips for RV Buyers

The number of families that are drawn to the pleasures of RV camping has grown markedly is the last decade and continues to grow rapidly. Unfortunately, in the rush to join those that are enjoying the camping experience, many people are buying RVs that are unsuitable for their unique needs. Just as in buying a home, it is of primary importance that the RV be of the correct size, offer the necessary amenities, and be affordable.

It’s possible that you have already purchased an RV and found that it does not fit your family’s requirements or lifestyle, or perhaps you haven’t yet committed to a purchase but are considering it. The following tips and suggestions may help you avoid the most common mistakes, and enable you to select an RV that will provide you with years of enjoyment.

The first, and most important, consideration is determining exactly how you intend to use the RV. Are you a day tripper? Do you wish only to camp out for a few weekends each summer? Are you considering a tour or all the National Parks? Some people buy RVs to experience the adventure of the open road – to explore the country. Others buy RVs simply to provide a safe, comfortable, and secure home away from home. It’s important that you evaluate your reasons for wanting an RV, and purchase one that matches those reasons.

The second most important consideration is size. How many persons will be staying in the RV. If it’s too large, maintenance and upkeep can be burdensome. If it’s too small, no one will enjoy camping in it, especially on rainy weekends when irritations can run high. What about sleeping accommodations. How many permanent beds are required, and how many can be fold outs? How many adults? How many children? What kind of privacy must be maintained?

RVs come in two popular types: those that must be towed, and those that are self contained and motorized. The towable types include pop-up tent trailers, full bodied trailers, and fifth wheelers. The motorized RVs can be motor homes, van conversions, and truck mounted campers. When considering a towable RV, ensure that you have a vehicle that is capable of towing the RV that you want to buy. Dealers can provide you with the towing capacity for each RV.

Floor plans and accessory equipment can also be critically important. If you have children, you’ll need flooring and upholstery that can stand up to abusive wear and tear and be easy to clean. If you are an older couple without children, you may wish to have high-end appointments, rich cabinetry, and leather upholstery.
Consider your cooking, lighting, and heating needs. Do you plan to camp only at private campsites with power and water hookups, or will you be roughing it in remote public campsites without power or water? Make sure that you have adequate battery power, generating capacity, and propane storage to suit your camping style.

Regardless of how your RV is ultimately configured, fuel economy will be a consideration. Travelling can be expensive. Make sure that your dealer provides you with accurate gas mileage specifications for the RV that you are considering.

Once you have factored in all of the considerations discussed above, you’re ready to buy and enjoy. You may find that some adjustments need to be made to keep your RV affordable, but in the long run, if you’ve made the right selection, you’ll find that the enjoyment you get from your RV makes it worth every penny.
