Selecting the Best RV Cover

The family’s RV or travel trailer represents a considerable investment. For some families it represents the largest investment they have ever made. It’s natural, then, that these families wish to do everything possible to protect their investment. When you are not using your RV, it is most probably parked on your property or at a rented space in an RV storage facility where it is exposed to the weather round-the-clock.

Over time, constant direct exposure to ultraviolet rays and driving rains can cause extensive damage. One low cost but effective way to protect your RV from this environmental damage is to purchase an RV travel trailer cover.

These covers are designed to shield your RV from the elements. In doing so, they will, over time, show the damaging effects of the elements. The trick is to buy a high-quality cover with a good manufacturer’s warranty, and to purchase it from a reliable dealer that can perform repairs when needed. This ensures that your cover will provide the needed protection for a lifetime, or at least for the useful life of your RV.

Before committing yourself to a purchase, check the specifications for the types of covers in which you are interested. Ensure that the cover is designed to withstand the weather conditions that prevail in the location where your RV will be stored. Determine if you will need any additional cables, ropes, or clamps to secure the cover to the RV. After selecting the type of cover and accessories needed, it’s time to take a few measurements.

Make sure that you have solid information about what size cover you need. Don’t rely upon a manufacturer’s assertion that a certain model of cover will fit your RV. Manufacturers make mistakes, and you don’t want to waste time and money returning a cover that does not fit properly. Measure your travel trailer for length, width, and height. Ensure that you include any bumpers, spare tire mounts, ladders, and air conditioners in your measurements. Do not include any trailer hitches or propane tanks in your measurements, as it is not necessary to cover these items.

When you come to the point where you are ready to make your purchase, look for a cover that exceeds your measurements. It’s better to have a cover that is a too large rather than one that fits so tightly that it must be stretched or forced in order to fit properly. This can damage the RVs finish. A cover that is slightly larger than is actually needed is a good choice. It will be easier to use, and the extra material can be easily controlled by the proper use of the attaching ties, ropes, and clamps.

Once you have purchased a good quality cover you can relax in the knowledge that the investment you have made in your RV will be protected when it is not in use, to ensure that it will be shipshape when your family goes on its next road trip.
