Every RV Road Trip Needs a Plan

You’ve finally bought your brand new motor home. It’s new and shiny, sitting in the driveway looking fit, trim, fully outfitted, and ready to take on the open road. Your destination is selected, your clothes are packed, you have all your travel guides and maps, and you’re ready to go. Are you absolutely sure? Do you really have everything that you need?

Have you thought out every possible problem that could arise to ruin your trip? Remember, you’re going to strange new places where you don’t know anyone, and no one knows you. There will be no close friends nearby ready to lend a helping hand. You won’t be able to rely upon your local and trusted repairman. Perhaps you should rethink your preparedness.

Before you disembark for your trip, be sure that you have all the paperwork that you need: picture identification, active driver’s license, RV registration, proof of insurance, and any medical information that might be needed in an emergency. Contact your RV dealer to get a list of RV repair facilities along your route that can service your RV when necessary. Be sure to include telephone numbers, websites, and addresses for each one. Smart RV campers mark the locations of these service centers on their travel maps.

Keep a copy of the RV’s warranty in a safe place in your RV, along with the name, address, and telephone number of the service department of the dealer from which you purchased your RV. This can be of critical importance if you should break down in a remote area where parts are not available. The service department of your RV dealership should be able to have the required parts drop shipped to your location.

Your RV insurance information can be of critical importance to you as well. Call your insurance agent. Tell him where you are going, and ensure that you have all the coverage necessary for any possible contingency. Find out if there is a national customer service center that you can contact if you have a problem. This information will be required by police or service centers in the event of an accident.

If your vacation schedule is tight and inflexible, you may want to check for dealers along your route that will rent you a motor home similar to yours, in case you have an accident or breakdown that will take considerable time to fix. This will allow you to continue on your trip while your RV is being repaired.

If it is your first time out on a major RV travel adventure, the routine preparations may seem overwhelming. Keep a master list of what you have done to prepare. Store this list in the RV. You can them update it as you think of new preparations on subsequent trips. You will get used to it. Proper planning and preparation will become second nature to you. You can now start on your trip and relax with the knowledge that you have done your homework, and can enjoy your trip regardless of any difficulty that might arise.
